HTML5 was a disappointment to many developers in 2012, who praise the new system. Of course, there are ways to tweak Netflix’s system already. They will then implement changes around the system to make sure users get quality content, without disruption. Netflix will dip their feet into HTML5, checking out what is good and what is not so good. Many users watch Netflix through these other portals, which don’t run on Silverlight.

The web is not a huge portal for Netflix either, they have mobile apps and applications for almost every service, including Chrome, they also have apps for TV boxes, like Apple TV and Roku. The plugin for the web works well and many users are content with the service. Netflix will not move over straight away, in fact, we believe they will enjoy Silverlight while it lasts.

Netflix could have gone with Adobe Flash or Quicktime, but they both require plugins, an annoyance on the web. There are other media players available for Netflix to hop onto, however, HTML5 is becoming a vastly improved system. Netflix currently runs about 1/3 of all prime-time web streaming videos, with competitors like Hulu and Amazon Prime sinking into second and third, respectively. Redmond will end support for Silverlight in 2021, so Netflix still has an eight-year moving period. This move is due to Microsoft giving up support for the Silverlight service, which allows companies to utilize media and interactive experience on the web for free. The company has released first details on their strategy for moving to the new system.
