For the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, he conducted The Magic Flute directed by Simon McBurney in 2018, and Mozart’s Requiem in 2019, his first collaboration with Romeo Castellucci.
His most important projects include Trauernacht (2014) directed by Katie Mitchell with music by Johann Sebastian Bach, the rediscovery of Luigi Rossi’s L’Orfeo (2016), Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine (2017) and the Purcell adaptation Miranda directed by Katie Mitchell (2017). Moreover, Raphaël Pichon is regularly invited to conduct major ensembles, such as Holland Baroque, Stavanger Symfoniorkester, Les Violons du Roy, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin moreover, he regularly performs with the Zurich Opera House. The ensemble has won particular acclaim for its interpretations of Bach’s sacred music and the tragédies lyriques of Rameau. In 2006, he founded Pygmalion, a choir and orchestra using solely historic-authentic instruments, whose programmes are informed by a strong interest in the affiliations that link Bach to Mendelssohn, Schütz to Brahms and Rameau to Gluck and Berlioz. As a young countertenor, he sang under the direction of Jordi Savall, Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman and Geoffroy Jourdain.
